With donations totaling 3,000 euros, Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin was able to support five more operations on seriously wounded Ukrainian soldiers. During the operations, individually manufactured 3D implants were inserted into the patients to replace destroyed bones. In this project, we are helping to procure the special titanium powder for 3D printing.
These are the stories of people who have received an implant:
- A soldier suffered a severe skull injury in a mine explosion in January 2024. After several months of stabilization in the hospital, a customized skull implant was developed and inserted. The operation was successful and the patient has a good chance of recovery.
- Another seriously wounded patient suffered a gunshot wound to the head in October 2023. Months later, after his health had been stabilized, a custom bone replacement was implanted that restored the head anatomy. The patient was able to return to duty after the operation.
- In collaboration with dentists, an implant was developed for a patient who suffered severe jaw injuries that is also suitable for dentures. This implant will restore the full function of his jaw
- In a complicated operation, surgeons were able to use a titanium bone cage to replace a soldier's destroyed forearm bone. The procedure made it possible to restore the stability and function of the arm.
- Two titanium implants were made to replace shattered toe bones for a wounded soldier who was at risk of amputation. Thanks to this implant, amputation was avoided and the patient is preparing to return to active duty.
Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin is continuously supporting the production of medical implants for severely injured and seriously wounded people. The bone replacement is manufactured individually for each patient by Ukrainian engineers in close coordination with the treating surgeons. An implant costs an average of 530 euros. This can significantly improve the health of those affected, enabling them to lead a normal life again.
