With a grant, Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin is supporting vital surgeries in Dnipro, Ukraine. Custom 3D-printed implants are replacing damaged skull bones. Five severely injured patients were successfully operated on thanks to donations totaling €3,000. These are their stories:
- Andriy from Vinnytsia was 20 and studying civil engineering when he volunteered for military service with his father and brother. He suffered a severe head injury during his deployment. Thanks to a custom-made implant, the damaged skull bone was replaced, and Andriy is now on the road to recovery.
- In another patient, the skull injury was so complex that only a 3D implant could help. The specially shaped titanium plate fits precisely and restores the natural shape of the head.
- Mykola, 33, suffered severe head injuries. Even during emergency surgery, it was clear that only a custom-made implant could repair the complex skull defect. After the procedure, the father now has a good chance of a full recovery and returning home.
- Another patient also suffered a severe head injury. Engineers and surgeons were able to fabricate and successfully implant a suitable bone replacement for him, too.
- Yevhen (31) from Kropyvnytskyi is a soldier who suffered a severe head wound during a deployment. Once all the inflammation had subsided, he was able to have an implant. He had previously lost his father and brother in the war. The family now hopes that he will recover quickly and be able to return to his job as a food technician. Yevhen has two young sons.
Due to Russia's devastating war of aggression, the need for bone replacements for war-wounded patients in Ukraine is enormous. For the patients, the implants mean the difference between a lifelong disability and an independent life. We sincerely thank all donors for their ongoing support, without which these operations would not be possible.
