With a grant, Ukraine Aid Berlin is supporting vital operations in Dnipro, Ukraine. Custom-made 3D-printed implants are replacing damaged skull bones. Thanks to donations totaling €3,000, five seriously injured patients were successfully operated on. These are their stories:
- Andrij from Vinnytsia was 20 and studying civil engineering when he volunteered for military service along with his father and brother. During his deployment, he suffered a severe head injury. Thanks to a custom-made implant, the damaged skull bone was replaced, and Andrij is on the road to recovery.
- In another patient, the skull injury was so complex that only a 3D implant could help. The specially shaped titanium plate fits perfectly and restores the natural shape of the head.
- Mykola is 33 and suffered severe head injuries. Even during the emergency surgery, it was clear that only a custom-made implant could repair the complex skull defect. After the procedure, the father of two now has a good chance of a full recovery and returning home.
- Another patient also suffered a severe head injury. Engineers and surgeons were able to fabricate and successfully implant a suitable bone replacement for him as well.
- Yevhen (31) from Kropyvnytskyi is a soldier who suffered a severe head wound while in action. Once the infections had subsided, he was able to receive an implant. He had previously lost his father and brother in the war. His family now hopes he will recover quickly and be able to return to his job as a food technologist. Yevhen has two young sons.
Due to Russia's devastating war of aggression, the need for bone replacements for war wounded in Ukraine is extremely high. For the patients, these implants mean the difference between lifelong disability and a self-determined life. We sincerely thank all donors for their ongoing support, without which these operations would not be possible.
