Five future mine detection dogs are being trained with the help of donations from Germany to save lives in Ukraine. A fundraiser for Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin on the video blog War and Tactic raised nearly 8,000 euros—enough to finance the extensive training of the animal specialists.
The dogs – Input, Ice Cream, IM Don, Nami, and Chooper – are German and Belgian Shepherds. They are being trained for their deployment for two years at the K9 Tactical Dog School Bavaria in collaboration with SOS Security Bavaria.
Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression, Ukraine has been considered one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Estimates suggest that 30 percent of the country is contaminated with mines or explosive ordnance. Millions of explosive devices lie in fields, forests, or roadsides—a constant threat to civilians, aid workers, and especially children.
The use of dogs is indispensable in search operations. Compared to technical equipment, well-trained detection dogs are more precise, more flexible, and particularly effective in difficult terrain. Their excellent sense of smell allows them to detect even minimal amounts of explosives.
Ukraine-Hilfe Berlin thanks all Donorsthat make this training possible. Every square meter of land cleared of mines saves lives in Ukraine.
