Winter aid: Generators and energy storage for Kharkiv

Ukraine Aid Berlin has once again organized a much-needed shipment of aid supplies to the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Several transports delivered 18 large diesel generators (17 kW) and 30 EcoFlow energy storage units (3.6 kWh) with a total value of €173,000. The devices will be used to provide emergency power to various municipal aid facilities.

  • Eighteen generators and fifteen energy storage units are deployed in heated shelters and supply tents. There are a total of 72 of these shelters in Kharkiv. In addition to heat and electricity, they provide internet access, mobile phone service, and hot meals.
  • The other energy storage units are in use at the city administration's emergency and coordination center, where they provide emergency power to rescue workers at sites affected by Russian airstrikes. The battery storage units also assist the housing and utilities office and the city's building authority during power outages.

Kharkiv continues to be subjected to constant missile attacks and bombing by Russia. Approximately 1.2 million people live in the city, including 200,000 displaced persons from the surrounding front-line areas. Nearly all of the city's power generation facilities were severely damaged or destroyed by Russian attacks during 2024. Power outages are commonplace, and energy supplies are strictly rationed.

The donated equipment makes an invaluable contribution to providing for people during the cold winter. Every day, the emergency tents alone provide 36,000 people with hot meals, electricity, and heating – a number that is expected to increase as the winter progresses.

Our aid supplies help ensure basic needs are met for the people of Kharkiv under extreme conditions. We thank KWS Saat, the AKB Foundation, bagobag GmbH, and all donors who made this vital assistance possible.
