To mark the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Deutsche Oper Berlin once again organized a fundraising campaign for Ukraine Relief Berlin. A remarkable €11,600 was raised through donations collected from staff and during the intermissions of the sold-out performance of La Gioconda. The opera and its employees have also actively supported our aid projects with in-kind and monetary donations on previous occasions.
On the same day, the State and Cathedral Choir and its support association hosted a musical memorial service in Berlin Cathedral. The donations collected there will also benefit our aid efforts.
On February 25th, the solidarity event "Peace and Freedom for Ukraine" took place in the Grunewald Church. Among those present was Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey, who read from moving letters written by Ukrainian women. Speakers also included the President of the World Council of Churches, Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, and theologian Markus Meckel. The event was organized by director and cultural manager Günter Jeschonnek.
We thank everyone who made these important events possible, as well as the donors for their generous support. The people of Ukraine continue to urgently need international aid, as Russia relentlessly pursues its criminal war of aggression.
